New Video Honors 60 Years of BFM History

April 2026 - Our Yearly Meeting asked us to prepare a 2-3 minute video about Birmingham Friends Meeting. We are celebrating 60 years since our founding in 1966 so our video speaks to this history. You can view it here.

Friends Maintain Silent Vigil For Peace

March 2026 - Birmingham Friends Meeting has taken up the Love as Action invitation to public witness issued by the American Friends Service Committee.  Friends and people of all faiths gather in Quaker-led silent worship all across the country—to share witness in opposition to militarism and the rising authoritarianism and suppression of human rights in the United States and abroad. Braving the cold, our group began meeting monthly in January at the Royal Oak Farmers Market, and we have continued since then. War is not the answer!

Hat Sewing Group Continues to Share the Warmth

December 2025 - A group of folks associated with BFM have been gathering this Fall and Winter to sew and sometimes knit winter hats for distribution at our Soup Kitchen and via local warming centers. Below are some pictures from a recent get-together where colorful and stylish fleece hats were sewn.

BFM Peace Banner Gets Around

July 2025 - Friends from Birmingham made two lovely banners promoting peace and justice that have now appeared at numerous rallies in Ohio and Michigan. Friends are showing up to protest cuts to government services, increased militarization and other threats to peace and stability.

Encouraging Valentines for Elected Officials

February 2025 - As part of our witness in the world, Friends try to maintain meaningful relationships with our elected officials and to encourage them to act in ways that promote peace, integrity and justice. Prior to Valentines Day this year, a group gathered after meeting to create personally signed cards thanking elected officials for their work to restore and protect democracy and support core human values. One of our members, Wink Covintree, formerly an art teacher at Friends School in Detroit, prepared the handmade valentine cards which were then assembled and signed.

Addressing Food Insecurity

January 2025 - Our meeting's Food Insecurity Committee has encouraged a new practice that involves Friends bringing jars of peanut butter on business meeting days, and they then are collected and taken to a nearby food pantry for distribution. We've done it twice now, to good effect.

Cookie Potluck and Carol Singing

December 2024 - This December at our annual holiday gathering, Friends enjoyed an amazing selection of home-baked cookies, a delicious lunch and holiday carol singing with piano accompaniment. We thank the Ajlounys for hosting us at their lovely home. Festivities included singing a special version of "Jingle Bells" written from a cat's perspective (Collar bells) and a gratitude tree where Friends could add leaves noting things they were grateful for in the last year.
