Welcome Friends

Birmingham Friends Meeting (Michigan, USA)

As members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), we welcome all who join us for unprogrammed worship.

Friends believe that there is that of God in every person. Each one present individually seeks communion with God. At the same time a sense of Divine Presence is felt in the communal silence. Anyone may speak from the silence to share a spiritual message in the form of a thought, idea, or prayer. Discussions of issues are held at other times.

Meeting for Worship is closed by shaking hands with those on either side. A short period of sharing, announcements, and general visiting follows.

Bi-Monthly, Birmingham Friends meet for business after meeting for worship, usually the second Sunday of the month (see events calendar). We regularly hold a evening potluck meal, typically on the third Friday of the month. Discussion sessions are also held periodically to consider topics of mutual concern. We welcome your participation at any or all of our activities.

Children are welcome to participate in 15 minutes of silent worship at the start of meeting, followed by our informal First Day school activities.

Workshop w Michael Wajda

1:30-4:00pm

Venue: Detroit Friends Meeting

The workshop, Exploring the "Secret Power" Among Us, takes up what Robert Barclay, a 17th-century Quaker publicist, called the secret power among us. Friends then and Friends today have had many names for this Inward Light and many experience it quite differently, if at all. During this two-and-a-half-hour workshop we will explore this power individually and together. How does it show up in our individual and corporate experiences? What difference does it make in our lives? How might we broaden and deepen our experience of and commitment to this Inward Teacher?

Hosted by Detroit Friends Meeting (19309 Greenfield Road, Detroit MI 48235)

Michael Wajda currently serves as clerk of the Steering Committee for the Quaker Call to Protect Democracy.
